I'm posting this here cuz firstly, the marshmallow character limit is ass. Secondly, I think this is advice maybe other people could use? I dunno If I'm exactly an authority figure on stuff like this but maybe it'll be good advice for people who need it. Lastly, I need to use this part of my website more lmao
OK so I originally had this whole elegant ass Neil Gaiman tumblr ask response but I found myself sounding too pretentious so I'm going to put this in an ordered list with my own commentary and stuff. Essentially, I was in your shoes not too long ago, but in the reverse. I wanted to write compelling male characters but I had not a lick of a clue how to do so.
I hope this will be helpful. Please keep in mind what worked for me may not work for you! This is just what I did as someone trying to write someone of the opposite gender.
1. Focus on making your character compelling, regardless of gender. Gender is a big part in playing how a character may be raised in a setting. The norms and struggles they may face. I always like to make characters that defy those societal expectations in some way. A lot of my male characters have both traditionally masculine traits and traditionally feminine traits.
My purple shinobi character falls into this well. He's a stoic ninja, his priority above all is the mission. He's gruff, sort of mean by default. That sort of stoic masculinity. But he's also deeply emotional, a crybaby even. He cries easily. I made that sort of a struggle for him. On one hand his clan enforces that stoicism. You are no human being, but a breathing weapon. But his very nature is to be emotional, to be kind. I cannot cry watching my brother's remains burn on the ceremonial pyre. So I stand there in silence, unmoving, unfeeling. If I am not allowed to grieve, to mourn, I will just feel nothing at all.
BUT SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND: Be wary. I've seen a lot of "haha. see. this woman is masculine and buff. and this turns me on." like yes, that's epic! me too man!!
ok now draw her progressing as a character
Like did she face struggles for going against the norm? Did she struggle internally? Did she get made fun of? How does she act as a result? Is she stoic, kinda mean? Does she just act kind, like nothing's wrong?
2. Do research into the feminine experience. Do you know a woman (you should know at least one, I hope...) Look at them. Talk to them. Put some of them into that character. Basing a character on real people you know can add a realism and relatability.
One of my characters is directly based on a few teachers I had back in High School. One of them was the most depressed man you have ever fucking seen. He walked like a sim whose plumbob was constantly red. He didn't attend his college graduation because he "hated everyone". He grew up as a nerdy kid and had a tough time in school because of that; then he grew up to be this grumpy 30 something year old with shit posture. My character's original concept was a fatherly English teacher; kinda basic, right? The stereotypical father figure. But in adding characteristics of someone I knew, I made him deeper than that. He's no longer this two-dimensional figure but a living and breathing guy who might remind you of someone you know.
3. Look at well written female characters in media. Watch analysis videos on them by women. Why do these women think of them as good characters? What makes them relatable to women, or relatable to anyone at all?
In my case for this tip, I did extensive research on Rust Cohle and Martin Hart from True Detective. Martin Hart in particular inspired me. A lot of people focus on Cohle and his very cerebral hyperintrospective outlook on the world; but I always considered Hart's character to help bring that out. Hart is very complex to me. On one hand, he's incredibly flawed. He's kinda scummmy, has a bad temper, cheats on his wife multiple times...but he's simultaneously fiercely protective of women and children, and believes firmly in justice, in doing the right thing (aside from his wife). I was so inspired by that, here's this guy who in many eyes is irredeemable, and yet you can't help but root for him. You want him to win, even when he's doing all these stupid things. You can't help but relate to him somewhat, that at his core he's just trying to do the right thing. I wanted to make a character as complex as that, with those kinda heavy flaws.
okay that's all I have. Good luck! I'm always happy to talk about this sort of stuff. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!!!!!
